Activities at Serra Cafema revolve around the exploration of surrounding Namib Desert sands and the lush oases along the river, a journey of contrasts. Informative nature drives and carefully guided quad bike excursions through the fragile dunes allow guests to experience the true Namib in its unbridled glory. The utmost care is taken to tread lightly on the dunes and preserve the unique and delicate habitats of this landscape. Boating on the Kunene River provides guests with the opportunity to venture through the lush riverside oases. Crocodiles and waterbirds seem out of place in this surreal, lunar-like landscape. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is also a highlight, as is a visit to a Himba settlement – one of the last true nomadic people in Africa. The fairy circle phenomenon is also best viewed in the Hartmann’s Valley

Serra Cafema’s home is in Namibia’s Kaokoveld, more specifically in the 300 000-hectare Marienfluss Conservancy, owned primarily by the Himba, and a model of ecotourism.
Tune in, tune out in one of the most untouched places on Earth, along a rushing river amidst an ochre desert – one of the world’s oldest. Respectfully engage with a community of Himba, Namibia’s last semi-nomads still living traditionally, and local custodians. Hear their stories, and share yours. When water levels permit, boat on the Kunene, with Angola’s craggy mountains in the distance and plenty of Nile crocs on the banks and in the water. Explore the dunes on foot and in game vehicles, perhaps spotting oryxes, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, or tiny desert chameleons. Along specially allocated, low-impact pathways, quad bike across the untamed, lunar landscape.
Guests can access this remote safari lodge in Namibia by air and land at the Serra Cafema Camp's airstrip. A transfer will take guests to the camp through the spectacular scenery.
ACCESS – SELF-DRIVE BASIS: At this time, Serra Cafema is not accessible on a self-drive basis. For any self-drive itinerary, vehicles would need to be parked, at own risk, in camp at Doro Nawas.
