Welcome to Kalahari Plains Camp

Kalahari Plains overlooks an immense pan with endless horizons and beautiful skies. Its eight en-suite canvas units – airy and insulated to keep temperatures comfortable – are each topped with a sleep-out platform where you can spend moonlit or star-studded nights. The charmingly traditional, wood and thatch main section consists of a lounge, dining area, pool, and deck. Solar power provides all the electricity and hot water in the camp. Healthy wildlife populations are present year round, many seen from vantage points in camp.

Kalahari Plains Camp is located in the northern eastern sector of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, about 28kms from Deception Valley. It overlooks a small waterhole at the edge of a ‘pan’, and is located in an area with plentiful desert wildlife.

Accommodation details

It comprises eight en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out platform above each from which to enjoy moonlit or star-studded nights. The main area consists of a lounge and dining area with a pool and deck. Solar power provides all the electricity and hot water in the camp and insulated canvas walls and roofs keep temperatures inside the units comfortable.

All year round wildlife is abundant in this region of Botswana. However, with the summer rains, the desert comes to life. Hundreds of plains game including springbok and gemsbok graze the grounds. Lions can also be encountered here and one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa and leopard are found here.

During the winter months, the Kalahari is a typical desert. The general game, carnivores, wildebeest, red hartebeest and steenbok and small predators can be seen here (black-backed jackal, Cape fox, honey badger and myriad mongoose species).

Birding

The Central Kalahari offers good bird watching. Over 250 species have been recorded, and the park is particularly good for raptors due to the high volume of small animals for them to feed on. Some of the big ground dwelling birds to look out for are ostrich, secretary bird and kori bustard. Smaller bustards, such as black bustard and red-crested bustard are common as well.

Best Time for Bird Watching

Central Kalahari is a great reserve for bird watching throughout the year, but the best time is during the wetter months, from November to April, when migrants are present. At this time, a lot of birds are breeding, and some species such as the whydahs transform their plumage from drab to spectacular. The best wildlife viewing months are around the same time.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve is located 250km/155mi south of Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. The drive takes about five hours. The park has four entrances. Most visitors driving to the park use the Matswere Gate, which is about 40km/24mi north of the popular Deception Valley. After rain, the road can be very bad and driving times will be longer.

It is much easier to fly to one of the camps inside or outside the park by chartered plane. Or you can fly to Maun Airport (MUB) and rent a 4x4 to drive yourself to the game reserve. Alternatively, you can book a safari by 4x4, and you will be picked up by your driver-guide at the airport.

Domestic Airlines & Flights in Botswana

Most domestic flights are operated by Air Botswana. Small charter flights are frequently used to travel between parks or to get to remote areas, such as the camps in the Okavango Delta.
