The Abu Private Reserve offers both superb Okavango Delta wildlife viewing, and the opportunity to witness the elephants of the Abu Herd. Time spent at Abu gives you a deeper understanding of elephant conservation – the premise on which Abu is based.
Abu is set in a pristine riverine forest and blends in seamlessly with the magnificent surrounding hardwood trees. Looking out over a large lagoon, an imaginative use of canvas has created a unique and luxurious style of tent. Each of the six en-suite tents has its own distinctive furnishings and fittings, imparting an air of opulence in the bush, and featuring an indoor and outdoor shower, an outdoor copper bath and a plunge pool sunk into the elevated teak deck. The multi-decked lounge and dining area and well-stocked library and study, and pool will keep you entertained, informed and energised while at Abu.
Abu is located in a 180 000-hectare (445 000-acre) private concession in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, one of the world’s most important wetland ecosystems

Detailed Itinerary itinerary Abu and Mombo Camps 7 days
Day 1
ABU CAMP
You will be met on arrival at Maun airport for your light aircraft flight to Abu. Abu offers a superb safari experience: luxury accommodation in the heart of a wildlife-rich private reserve, plus the opportunity to learn more about our ground-breaking elephant conservation programme. On game drives and mokoro excursions, you can witness the members of the Abu Herd as they prepare (at their own pace) for release into the wild. The Abu Private Reserve is noted for wildlife including lechwe, zebra, giraffe, tsessebe and roan, plus lion, leopard and hyaena.
Day 2 & 3
Experience the myriad habitats of Botswana’s Okavango Delta on game drives and guided nature walks, and by boat and mokoro. Meet the elephant care experts tasked with preparing the Abu Herd for release into the wild and learn more about the conservation of this keystone species. Optional extra scenic flights offer a new perspective on the Delta, and helicopter excursions to the culturally significant Tsodilo Hills can be arranged (also at an additional cost).
MOMBO CAMP
Day 4
A short charter flight will bring guests to “The Place of Plenty”. Situated at the northern tip of Chief’s Island, the largest landmass in the Okavango, Mombo’s elegant design and spacious, luxurious tents complements its magnificent surroundings. This quintessential luxury safari camp looks out on the almost-continuous presence of wildlife, from large herds of plains game to lurking predators.
Day 5 & 6
Presentations or talks on the return of the rhino to Botswana, and our pioneering role in it, are held regularly by one of our available rhino conservation experts. These talks address the current plight of the rhino and how Wilderness Safaris is helping to safeguard these mammals. Morning and afternoon game drives offer guests the opportunity to see these critically endangered species within their natural environment. Experience the Place of Plenty by enjoying all that this special place has to offer. Daily game drives exploring Chief’s Island are the order of the day but there are plenty of things to see and do. A hide situated 20 minutes from the camp is a wonderful spot for photographing birds and animals. For the more active safari goer there’s a gym to make sure you keep up your fitness levels while overlooking the plains! The Mombo Spa is another great place to unwind. Enjoy a massage treatment in the comfort of your room or private deck.
Day 7
A last morning game drive will be followed by a Wilderness Air flight returning you to Maun or Kasane.
