Mara Nyika Camp, meaning “Large Plains or Great Plains,” is an intimate tented camp set in a valley and. a perfect location for your safari in Kenya. The camp tucked away under the treetop canopy straddles a small stream on the western side of the Naboisho Conservancy bordering the Maasai Mara.

Mara Nyika Camp offers guests three luxury guest suites in addition to 2 x 2 bedroom family suites.

Guests staying at Mara Nyika Camp explore the private and exclusive 50,000-acre Naboisho Conservancy, the second largest conservancy in the greater Maasai Mara region. “Naboisho” means “coming together” in the Maasai’s Maa language and represents the 500 local landowners who established the conservancy. The conservancy model strives to conserve natural and cultural heritage, tourism, and livelihoods for the local communities. Each guest’s stay supports over 500 Maasai families with a sustainable livelihood and helps to ensure the conservation of this vital corner of the Maasai Mara eco-system.

Many guests opt to spend a few days at Mara Nyika Camp combined with a stay at our Mara Expedition Camp, Mara Toto Camp, Mara Plains Camp or the Mara Plains Jahazi Suite. This perfect safari in Kenya combination allows one to experience all three wildlife areas: the private Olare Motorogi and Naboisho Conservancies and the Maasai Mara Reserve. Five tented suites set on raised decking. The light-coloured canvas suites are set up high under the tree’s canopy to be offer guests awe inspiring views out over the bush. Suites include en-suite with flush loo, shower (indoor), copper bath tub and double basins and hot and cold running water.

Accommodating children and sharing accommodation

• We look forward to having children stay with us that are 6 years and older;

• Triples for children sharing with adults may be arranged upon request;

• The Nyika Family Suites are perfectly suited to accommodate families consisting of 2 adults and 2 children (aged 6 – 15) sharing or 3 adults sharing;

• Families with children may be accommodated in the same vehicle as other guests;

• Young children must be supervised as the camp is open, with high predator densities in and around camp and there is a river nearby;

• Great Plains Young Explorers Kid’s program is available – thoughtfully designed to explore various experiences and topics from birding to cooking to art to tracking wildlife.

Geographic Access Directions

• Scheduled aircraft transfers to the nearby Naboisho (ol Seki) airstrip, from Nairobi’s Wilson domestic airport (flying time 1hr 15mins) and other locations in Kenya;

• Mara Nyika Camp is an approximate 40-minute drive from the airstrip with often wildlife viewing opportunities en route;

• Co-ordinates: 01° 22.557’ min South, 035° 17.649’ min East;

• Private charters are able to land at the Naboisho (ol Seki) Airstrip

Possibiity of  disabled access

• The camp layout is constructed with wheelchair bound guests in mind with the understanding that we will be accommodating where possible but there may be times when sand and mud may make it a little more difficult. Our staff are well trained in dealing with this.

 Photography

Each of Mara Nyika’s guest tents has a professional Canon camera set, including a Canon 5D camera body and Canon 100-400mm and 24-70mm lenses. Photos will be downloaded to a memory stick on guest’s departure. Each tent comes with a pair of high-quality binoculars for guest use as well. Photographic tuition can be arranged for guests (at an additional cost) and we recommend booking this prior to arrival if possible. Birding

The Masai Mara isn’t one of Kenya’s birding hotspots. However, with more than 500 bird species recorded, this isn’t a bad place to mark off a lot of Kenya’s savannah species from your bird list. The park is particularly rich in raptors with 57 species present. Bateleurs can often be seen soaring above the grassy plains and predator kills are a good place to find up to six species of vultures scavenging. Migratory birds are present from November to April.

Best Time for Bird Watching

The Masai Mara offers good bird-watching any month of the year, but the best time is from November to April when the migrants from Europe and north Africa arrive. This coincides with the Wet season when many species can be seen in breeding plumage. June to October is the Dry season, and tends to be best for general wildlife viewing.

Wildlife & Animals

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s flagship park. Sightings of four of the Big Five are pretty much guaranteed. Black rhino is more elusive, but can sometimes be spotted in the Mara Triangle. The reserve is one of the best for big cats, but sightings of smaller predators like bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal and spotted hyena also tend to be rewarding. Antelope include impala, reedbuck, Thomson's gazelle, eland and topi, while buffalo, elephant and giraffe are relaxed and easily spotted.

Wildlife Highlights

The legendary wildebeest migration is one of the world’s most amazing wildlife encounters. Sometime in July and August, millions of animals leave the Serengeti and head into the Masai Mara around September. The crossing of the Mara River along the way is the most spectacular part of the migration. Around October, the migration slowly heads back into the Serengeti again.

It should be noted that, although the pattern is well known, the exact timing of the migration is unpredictable as animals move with the rain looking for greener pastures.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara is good throughout the year. The best months for the wildebeest migration are September and October. June to October is relatively dry, and offers the best general wildlife watching.

Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara is generally very safe as long as you use common sense and listen to the advice given by your guide. Incidents are extremely rare.
