Kafue National Park
Know the Park you would be visiting during your tour.
Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s most unique wildernesses. It is one of the biggest National Parks on the continent (roughly the size of Wales at more than 22,000km²), and its vast size includes a variety of different wildlife habitats to be explored. One of Africa’s best kept secrets, the park has evaded mass tourism and been left untouched and unspoiled, as it should be. This allows guests to experience excellent game viewing with a rich diversity of wildlife, stunning landscapes and uninterrupted interactions with nature. The park is named after the mighty Kafue River that meanders through it for 250km. It enters the park in the North-East and forms beautiful Lake Itezhi-Tezhi in the south, a natural draw for large herds of antelope and elephant. Other well-known rivers which run through the park are the Lunga and Lufupa Rivers, both feeder tributaries to the Kafue River. The intricate water systems and lake dominate the landscape in the North and East sections of the park where the majority of the safari camps are located.
Kafue National Park is Zambia’s biggest and most established National Park and is easily accessed from both Lusaka and Livingstone, only a 3 to 4 hour drive away. There are also a number of airstrips, including Mukambi’s newly built airstrip, just 5 minutes downstream from the lode, making the park a good option for safari charters.
Busanga Plains
The beautiful Busanga Plains are situated in the Northern part of the park. The jewel of the Kafue, the area is famous for its extensive floodplain which drains after the rainy season, attracting large numbers of game and fantastic birdlife. ‘One Fig’, a huge fig tree in the middle of the plains, is a prominent landmark. The well-known National Geographic documentary, ‘Swamp Lions’, was filmed exclusively on the Busanga Plains and it’s also no surprise that Getaway Magazine rated Busanga as one of the ‘top 10 secret gems of Africa’. The plains are seasonal due to the flooding in the wet season and small safari camps like our own Busanga Plains Camp operate solely in the dry season.
Nanzhila Plains
The Nanzhila Plains in the south of the park, although not frequently visited, are well worth exploring. The open grass plains and dambos (shallow floodplains) are speckled with a large variety of antelope, including zebra, reedbuck, impala, kudu, eland, and waterbuck. There is a plethora of extraordinary birdlife too. Look out for wattled cranes, Dickinson’s kestrels, martial eagles, swallow-tailed bee-eaters, and chattering flocks of black-cheeked lovebirds.
Kafue River
The Kafue River, a life source for much of Kafue’s fauna and flora, flows throughout the year. Some sections are wide and slow flanked with spectacular riverine forests, while others stretches are fast flowing and interspersed with islands. Boat cruises and fishing trips are a must for guests with most safari lodges and camps situated along the riverbank.
Itezhi-Tezhi Dam
The Kafue River flows into the Itezhi-Tezhi dam, Zambia’s second biggest dam, after Kariba. With a surface area of 370km², it provides the perfect opportunity for boating and fishing trips. The shores vary from grassland to rocky bays, with the open plains around the lake attracting a large diversity of animals and birds.
Kafue Wildlife
The wildlife of Kafue is some of the richest in Africa. After years of poaching and neglect in the 1980s and 1990s, the breeding herds of elephant have recuperated and settled down and the large predators are back in their numbers. These include several prides of lion, cheetah and the ever elusive leopard. If you’re lucky, you may even see packs of the endangered wild dog. Other common sightings in the park include buffalo, zebra, hippo and various antelope species like impala, puku, sable, hartebeest, bushbuck, roan and waterbuck. The Kafue National parks boasts the largest number of different antelope species, 20 in total.
Kafue Birds
The diversity of habitats in the Kafue National Park make it one of the best locations in Africa for birding. The Kafue River, wetlands, savannah and woodland boast an impressive 478 of Zambia’s 733 recorded bird species. Among them are the African Finfoot, the African Wattled and Crowned Crane, Fish Eagle, Woolly-Necked Stork, Saddle Billed Stork, Goliath Heron, Ground Hornbill, African Fin Foot, Pel’s Owl, Purple-Crested Lourie, and Chaplin’s Barbet.
Mukambi Safari Lodge
When to visit Mukambi Lodge
Mukambi Safari Lodge is open all year round. Our peak-season is May-December, but during the Emerald Season (December-May), the Kafue National Park also has wonderful safaris to offer. Game might be a little harder to spot, but ‘the fifty shades of green’, stunning bright light (photographer’s best) and beauty of the bush still guarantee a unique and highly rewarding experience.
Mukambi Safari Lodge was one of the first and most established safari lodges in Kafue National Park and one of the few lodges open in the Northern and Central part of Kafue National Park that stays open all year around
MUKAMBI SAFARI LODGE
where it all began. Often referred to as “The Gateway to The Kafue National Park”, the lodge is situated on the banks of the glistening Kafue River. Live in the company of the local wildlife which find sanctuary around the lodge area including impalas, baboons, monkeys, elephants, hippos, leopard, jackal and even a small pride of lion; and of course, our resident wild cat Mauw! Seamlessly fitting into the surrounding wilderness the lodge has been designed with nature in mind. Thatched ceilings keep the interiors cool and wooden decks overlook the rambling river. After your game drive or fishing trip, cool down in the infinity pool while the hippos wallow in the river below or relax with a cold drink in hand in one of our lounge areas offering stunning panoramic views. Peruse our curio shop full of local treasures, proudly made by the women’s community group or indulge in a relaxing massage whilst listening to nature. As evening draws, chat to one of our friendly and knowledgeable guides on an activity or around the campfire before retiring to the comfort of your room and the sounds of the African night.

ACTIVITIES
Game Drives
Mukambi Safari Lodge offers game drives daily. One departs at sunrise and the afternoon drive (partly a night drive) leaves at approximately 2 hours before sunset. Drivers are 3.5 to 4 hours long. Our vehicles are located in the park, which is a short boat trip across the Kafue River, so all game drives depart from within the park. If you don’t spot the family of leopard, who frequent underneath our parked safari vehicles, our guides take you on several loops throughout the park, where you will undoubtedly find many varieties of antelopes, as well as birds, and if lucky, you can find the larger game, such as elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs and cheetah. In the morning you can watch the sunrise as you search for game, then have a short tea and coffee break to stretch your legs, and later arrive at camp with a hot breakfast awaiting you. During our evening drives the guides find a nice spot to stop for a drink and watch the sun go down, before continuining into the night, attempting to spot the nocturnal game, such as bush baby, honey badgers as well as cats.
Walking Safaris
Walks leave in the early morning hours after sunrise to avoid the heat of the day. The walks take place in the Kafue National Park itself and are approximately 3 hours. Our guides will talk you through everything Kafue has to offer that otherwise goes unnoticed, showing how the whole ecosystem works together to support the National Park. You can find nature at its most untouched on such safaris. (Unfortunately not available due to the wet conditions and high grass from approximately Dec to May).
Fishing Trips
Fishing trips by boat take place at any time of day and are approximately 2.5 hours long. While out on the river, just you and your guide, you can enjoy the surrounding nature while fishing. We supply basic equipment and bait to assist you on your way to catching one of the many fish found in this area, whether that be a silver barbell, a larger cat fish or Kafue bream. Keen fishermen may bring their own equipemnt to take on the fishing trips.
Boat Cruises / Sunset Cruises
Boat cruises over the Kafue river can also take place at any time of the day but we also have a scheduled Sunset Cruise each evening. On the boat cruise we shall drive you slowly up the river, giving you the chance to take in the surroundings, have some sundowners and watch the sunset. You can bet your money you will see hippos and crocodiles and a plethora of birds, about which our guides can answer your questions.
Tour to Mukambi Community School
With the help of generous donors we were able to establish the Mukambi Community School. Daily visits to the school are scheduled after the morning activity.
Guests often ask us what they can bring as a gift for the school so we generally request for English reference books and children’s reading books and magazines for their library plus any consumables. However, any donations are well received!

Game drives depart from Busanga Plains camp daily. One departs at sunrise and the afternoon drive (partly a night drive) leaves at approximately 2 hours before sunset. Drives are 3.5 to 4 hours long. You will make your way across the open plains from camp, the beauty of drives here is the openness of the plains, it guarantees that you will see multiple species in view at once. It also means you have the chance to see some spectacular stalking by predators of the various types of antelope, and the speed at which they can run on open ground.
The Busanga Plains area is also perfectly situated to see large numbers of less common animals such as puku, red lechwe, Lichtenstein’s hartebeast, oribi and servals. But is is also well know for the big lions, buffalo, elephant and wildebeest. Cheetah and wild dog are also often sighted, while a special treat is the ‘resident’ herd of rare roan antelope. For birding enthusiasts, the park boasts over 500 species, including endemics such as Chaplin’s barbet & African fin foot.
A Night Under the Stars
If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that there are few things more humbling or awe-inspiring than gazing up into the vastness of a star-spangled night sky. Stepping outdoors to sleep beneath the stars has been known to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. And because sleep is one of the three major pillars of health, it only makes sense that slumbering in the great outdoors is something we should all try at least once in our lives.
Therefore we have built the star-bed at Busanga Plains Camp to give you a truly unique experience! The star-bed is on 4 meter platform with a railing and a mosquito net. At 2 meters high we have a flushing toilet and hand basin. There are also a handheld radio and paraffin lamps provided for your safety and comfort. Guests can book the star-bed on arrival in camp at no extra cost.
