This area contains 23 bird species that are restricted to the Albertine Rift, which cannot be seen in any other part of East Africa!
Lake Mburo National Park – Given that it is centred on a series of swamp-fringed lakes, the park is teeming with 310 recorded bird species, including 60 specialist water birds. The open Water birds include; Pink-backed pelican, Darter, White pelican, Yellow-billed duck, Long-tailed cormorant, White winged black tern and Greater cormorant. Lakeshore and swamp birds include the Fish eagle, Pied kingfisher, African finfoot, Great white egret, and Night heron. The green acacia woodland surrounding the lakes provides shelter to 68 different species of mammals, including zebra, topi, warthog, buffalo, impala, roan, leopard, hyena, jackal, and the last surviving Ugandan population of eland.
Gorilla Trekking – One of the top attractions in Uganda is to explore the forests and discover the vast variety of wildlife that live within Uganda, including the Mountain Gorilla.
ITINERARY
Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
ITINERARY
You will be met and collected from Entebbe and driven southwestwards to Lake Mburo National Park (the drive will be approximately 5-6 hours), the only park in the country with an entire lake from which it derives its name. In the afternoon enjoy a boat ride, viewing a diversity of animal and plant species: crocodiles, hippos, and birds including pelicans, Black Crake, and heron.
ITINERARY
After an early morning game drive, we depart for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (the drive will be approximately 6-7 hours). The park derives its name from its thick vegetation with an immense variety of evergreen trees, festooned with lianas, and epiphytes, which reach great heights in their search for sunlight and is known to host half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas.
ITINERARY
After an early breakfast, you will be taken to the Park Headquarters for a short briefing after which you will enter the forest and start your Gorilla trek (please note that a drive may be required to your trekking starting point). Trekking can be anything from 2 hours to as long as 8 hours, if not longer depending on where the Gorillas are situated on the day.
ITINERARY
After breakfast, we depart Bwindi and head back to Entebbe, arriving in the evening (this is a long drive of approximately 9-10 hours so we do recommend a flight from Kihihi to Entebbe at an additional cost).

Mihingo Lodge or similar
Mihingo is a luxurious, family owned lodge in a magical setting adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park. Perched high on a rocky kopje, whose pre-Cambrian granite boulders were formed over 500 million years ago, it has spectacular views over a vast savannah landscape. Designed to blend in with its fragile surroundings, this environmentally friendly lodge offers comfort, relaxation and the experience of being at one with nature.
An infinity pool overlooks the valley below where buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bush buck and zebra can be seen at the waterhole. On the rocks you may have the rare chance of seeing the resident family of Klipspringers. We cannot guarantee that you will see a leopard, but on a night game drive you do have a good chance. As Rungwe Kingdon (the son of the well-known wildlife author, Jonathan Kingdon, and one of Mihingo’s guests) once told us “I have seen more leopards in Lake Mburo National Park than any other park in East Africa”.
To further enhance your experience of wild Africa, Mihingo is the only lodge in Uganda to offer daytime and overnight horse safaris into the national park.
The only regret that many of our guests have is that they wish they had booked to stay longer than only a night or two. We hope this website will help you to see how many wonderful things there are to do when you stay at Mihingo Lodge.
